Hydrogen sulphide, or H2S, is a colourless gas. It is known for its distinctive smell of rotten eggs, which can be very unpleasant even in extremely small concentrations.

Hydrogen sulphide occurs naturally in certain geological formations, such as volcanic areas and oil and gas wells. It is also produced by bacterial decomposition of organic matter in the absence of oxygen, such as in swamps, sewers and sewage treatment plants. Exposure to high concentrations can be hazardous to health. The gas is toxic and can cause various symptoms when inhaled, ranging from eye, nose and throat irritation to dizziness, nausea and even unconsciousness or worse.

Besides the health risks, hydrogen sulphide is also corrosive to metals and other materials. For example, it can lead to the formation of sulphuric acid, which causes damage to pipelines, equipment and infrastructure.

Carltech provides various solutions for detecting and measuring H2S, with or without sampling and gas conditioning system.
